Back to Work

I have been working at Orchard Park Country Club for about 3 years and when the month of January comes around every year I get so excited. For the whole month the club is closed due to remodeling, cleaning, etc. Let me tell you its been a breeze, not hearing my boss yelling and going crazy on us, or the annoying people I work with. You may think I am being a little mean, but if you work there you would say the same thing.

At Orchard Park Country Club I work in Banquets as a server. I work big parties such as weddings, birthdays, showers, and much more. My job is to wait on the guests. I usually get three tables and with about 8 or 12 people at each, so it’s a lot of work. Hopefully I will be working in the dining room, which is being a waitress and serving the members.

I was waiting for my boss to call me because its February and I wanted to work because I would like some money and the money is good. I make ten dollars an hour, not too bad. Colleen called and she wanted me to work on Sunday at 11:30, so I guess I was going back to work and its always weird going back because you have not been there for so long and you go in the club and you kind of forget what to do and your definitely sore by the end of the shift.

Orchard Country Club has been a great experience for me. I have learned a lot from working there, including discipline. Even though, I complain a lot, I enjoy the money and know that I won’t be able to find a job like the one I have anywhere else.

My Cousins Wedding

It started off six hours driving to Philadelphia for the weekend to be at my cousins wedding. I admitted the drive was so long and annoying, but we arrived at this five-diamond hotel called the Ritten, it was breath taking. I love my family, just being together and seeing them happy made the whole weekend so much fun.

When very one arrived at the hotel and got settle, at 6 was cocktails and ordure’s, it was so nice, they served vegetable and fruit display, sandwiches and chicken fingers. Erin my cousin is going to marry Brendan Mkquin. They were the perfect couple, so nice, carrying and fun to be with. They meant in college where they were going at Penn State and been together ever sense.

The next day was the big day the wedding at 4:00pm. In the afternoon my family and I went to lunch and walk around the city, the city was beautiful, the big buildings and the people were way different then us. We arrived back to the hotel and got ready for the wedding. The wedding was next store to the hotel so it was easy to get everyone together on time. My cousin is very organized; she likes everything to go well, she has always been like that. Ceremony began right at four. Erin look wonderful, her dress was breath taking, the people of the wedding party looked beautiful. The ceremony was well organized and was very nice.

After the wedding, two bus shuttles pick our family up to take us to the reception. I have a big family so the busses were needed. The reception was this big building and the first floor was cocktails and orderives and looking down was the reception would be, I was taken away by the room, there is no words in how beautiful the room looked, from everything, the tables and the center piece, to the flowers to the wedding table and the cake was tall and colorful. I was at table ten and we started with salad and our main course, we picked what we want when we got the invitations, the choice was steak, salmon, or vegetarian. I had the vegetarian meal, it was vegetarian lasagna. Everyone loved the food, specialty my family, we love to eat.

Well the next day, was the day we packed up and leave at 11 a.m. I didn’t want to leave I loved the city and was having way too much fun. Around eight 0’clock brunch was being served for the family down stairs in the private room. They had everything to choose from. So when the whole family was sitting down enjoying there breakfast, my other cousin Pat announce that he was engaged to his girl friend Heidi, we were so happy and ready for another wedding.

A Report on Depression

Some people may know a lot about depression, they may say its just being sad lonely and really don’t see what it really is and it effects your life.” Depression can be temporary response to many situations and stresses. In adolescents, depressed mood is common because of the normal maturation process, the stress associated with it.

The true definition is adolescent depression is a disorder occurring during the teenage years marked by persistent sadness, discouragement, loss of self-worth, and loss of interest in usual activities. My sources it is difficult to recognize and treat because it wears so many different disguises. The question I ask is what are the top three causes of teen depression? Being so much on this topic, I wanted to generalize it and gather only importance of my research.

Being a student at West I wanted to ask my fellow classmates their thoughts on this topic. Stephanie says depression is when something tragic happens to someone and they let it take over their lives. A question I asked was do you think there is a treatment for depression? She says it’s a self-treatment and you have to work on it and it won’t happen over night. Interviewing Stephanie I also have similar thoughts on this subject, depression is not when your mad that day, it’s when something bad may happened to them or someone they know and I think the best way to get help is to talk to someone, it maybe a teacher, council, mom, etc. That’s the first step to get treated.

In my research I have found that there is a lot of symptoms and if you think or feel something is wrong there is signs and test you can take. The doctor will perform a physical examination and order blood test to rule out medical causes of the symptoms. For teens the doctors will evaluate the teen for signs of substance abuse, such as heavy drinking, smoking, or any drug in their system.

An Expert that I spoke with is KD a LCSW, who is a social worker at West and she gave me quite a bit of information on Depression. She says the top three causes of depression is very often a chemical balance that comes naturally and also can be genetics that run in the family. It maybe social stressor, someone may have a death in the family or a grown up in poverty or divorce. It could be anything. Another one is other mental health issue. Mrs. DiPasquale reveres to a book that has all types of symptoms. The book is called DSM-4 and she has to read this thick to know what she knows. To get help, you should first seek counseling or tell someone. Also you can see a doctor to see if you have depression, if so he or she might give you medication but that’s not great step to get in to.

Referring to my question what are the top three causes of teen depression? It’s a really important topic and it starts in your teens. I feel that if you have depression it really affects your life and you should get treated and talk to someone.

Ways to Help Out

In today’s world, you will find rich and successful people. Some may appreciate what they have and some take things for granted. Then you have the people that just get by but have the means to be happy. There also are the needy people who require other people and some form of assistance to get by.

So I say give a little, Since Christmas is coming up go support a charity and help others. In The Buffalo News published the article, ” The needy need you”. The greater the need, the fewer people are able to help. Since the holidays are coming around there are many things people can do to give to people who are in need. ” The neediest Fund needs the help of all who can give to help make the holiday season a little cheerier for families who can’t afford presents for children or a special holiday meal.” Anyone interesting in getting involved, The Buffalo News 26th annual drive has begun for 2007, seeking donations of gifts for children of various ages and cash to buy 12,000 dinners and other perishable foods. The newspaper also states that a family’s needs that people help ends up life changing. ” Emma D. Sapong reports last year the neediest fund help ends out a family, the mother Debpra Merchant is still grateful for making last Christmas happened. Debora says her kids got everything they wished for and more if it wasn’t for News Neediest fund. The total earnings last year bought holiday dinners for 12,000 to 150,00, through the food bank of Western New York.

What I found interesting is at West there are so many things going on to help out someone. We have a giving tree, which is a tree in the front foyer and children’s name are on the tree and you pick a child and you buy a Christmas gift for them. We have the can food drive; we collect can goods, boxes and etc. to help out others so they have a nice Christmas dinner like the most of us.

To find more suggestions to help out people who need you, I recommend looking in the Buffalo news, because they have something new everyday for you to get involved, So I say take a chance and help someone for the holiday. It’s about helping out others then your self and feeling good about what you have accomplished. So get involved if it maybe community service, donating money, getting involved in a charity or at your school.

The Disaster in the Media

In today’s society people question about how music, television and the radio have affected young kids today. Statistics have shown how the media has increased violence, which we see in today’s society.

In the rap music and music videos, they talk about violence and guns, swear words, and poverty. It teaches kids to imitate them and talk like the rappers talk. Because of their action they think that they can get away with it and not deal with any consequences. Children start watching T.V. at 2 to 11 years old without parents. There are so many reality T.V. shows that kids watch and believe that they can do the same thing, not understanding that most of the reality shows on T.V. is not real. The media blames the parents. I agree with this statement because the parents need to be involved and know what their kids are watching and not be so selfish and not caring. Parents might scream, yell at their kids, but no consequences are given for their child’s actions. But then it’s the medias fault in what they put on T.V., radio, music, and the Internet because all they care about is the money coming in and they don’t care that kids are involved.

Today’s society there is so much going on that we need to address and now people are taking about the media, which I think these problems have been going on for too long of a time and something needs to change. Movies and television also have a great impact on children. Television shows are becoming more and more dangerous for Young people. The average child watches 25 hours of TV a week. Cartoons are setting bad examples for young children. There is minor inappropriate language in cartoons that should not be said or even introduced to the age group that watches cartoons. The availability of shows for children is another large issue. One area that children are now known to watch wrestling. Family events consist of watching wrestling, which obviously means that the parents allow the children to watch it. Another problem is the Internet. The Internet is the on technology that has grown the most in these past few years. I would have to say, from personal experience, that almost every household owns a computer. on the Internet, it is almost impossible to be forbidden from a site unless you’re on school computers or have securities set. Kids are exposed to anything and everything on the Internet.

When children watch these horrible movies and show, listen to this awful music, and addict themselves to the Internet sites, they begin to act in similar ways because that is the way they were introduced to it and so they think it is OK. “All media exist to invest our lives with artificial perceptions and arbitrary values.” This quote came from the website www.quotegarden.com, by William Bernbach.  For the parents who raise their children right and set limits and rules for what they do, they learn the correct way of approaching things and are taught about bad things in life at the right time. Again, children are becoming damaged at young ages, all due to the media. If we would find ways to eliminate the media that is inappropriate for children it would not only better our children, but also better the children that will eventually become parents.

The life of a senior

It’s been three years and my class can now can call them self’s a senior. It’s scary to think it’s been three years and we came this far and soon to be graduating in 2008 and leaving West, heading out into the real world. It seems like just yesterday I was walking the halls as a freshmen.

For me being a senior its sad to think I am never coming back to high school and that I am moving on to college. I am really going to miss seeing my friend’s everyday, seeing my teachers, going to the football games, especially the pep rally. This year has been awfully stressful with deciding which college I would like to go to. Also you hear most people say senior year is so easy, senior year is such a blow off and that there is less work. That wasn’t the case for me. Everyday I have homework or a project to start every other day, especially senior projects, like English and participation in government project. The workload that I feel now is difficult because on top of all that i have my two jobs.

With all this work, I also have to decide what college I want to go to. It feels so incredibly difficult to choose what I want to do with the rest of my life in so little time. As an 18 year old teenager it is so hard to think of what the rest of my life will hold. I have been thinking about going to St. Bonaventure or Medaille. Both of these colleges are close to home so if I ever needed to return home, I could. Also, family is at both of these colleges which comforts the scary feeling of moving out and being on my own. I just can’t believe that in less than 10 months I will be living in a dorm room, with a complete stranger, and surrounded by a whole new environment.

It has already been a quarter of the year that flew by. I know that the rest of the year will come too fast and it scares me. Switching from the small world of a high school filled with so many clicks and drama, to a college or university filled with thousands of people who are much more mature is such a change. Then after college, going off to live on my own is going to be even a bigger switch.

Growing up is a part of life that every single human has to experience. As you get older you wish to be an older age for certain things, but in reality, I wish I could stay young forever. I know that in time, I will be settled into a new life, but the hard part is right now. Making your way to the top of your dream career, and obtaining a job is such a journey. I just hope that I will succeed in whatever it is that I do, and my main concern is that I will be happy with what I end up doing.

The Experience of Traveling

One of my interests is traveling. I love to travel, it’s my escape from homework and my life. It’s a time for me to see the world and not worry about anything. I have been to North Carolina, Virgina, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Florida with my family. Recently, I just started going on vacation on my own. Usually I bring my friends with me to visit my family.

Two summers ago, I went to California with my friend Natalie. We went for 10 days and stayed with my brother who lives there. While we were there, we flew down to Las Vegas, Nevada to visit my aunt and uncle. They invited us for 3 days and showed us the city. I loved both places. This past summer, I traveled to Las Vegas again with my friends Natalie and Kate because I loved it so much before. We spent 10 days there and stayed with my brother who now lives there.

Traveling before with my family I enjoyed a lot. It was a nice relaxation and getaway. Now, though, traveling alone taught me independence. There is a lot to handle when you travel without your parents being there for you to depend on. First of all, you have to be able to handle your money well. You should know how to keep a budget so you don’t end up with little or no money towards the end of the trip. I succeeded in doing so, because I had experience with it the trip before. I actually had a lot left over. Also, when traveling alone, you must stay focused in the airport. You don’t have your mom there to listen to all the important information for your trip. You have to take responsibility for your own ticket and remember all the gates you must be at. It sounds easy, but when your alone, it is quite difficult. With the short amount of time, and the big airport to walk, it causes a lot of tension.

My next vacation I am supposing will be my senior trip. Considering that I am a senior, it should be the best one yet. I was thinking about going to New York City for a switch from warm suburban areas to a crowded city. I have never been there before, but some of my friends have and I have heard nothing but great things about it. Shopping is one of my favorite things to do, and New York City is just the place to go for that. I was also considering traveling out of the country. My first choice would be Ireland. I am 95% Irish so going there would be such a good time. Some of my family has been there before, and they loved it, so I would really enjoy going there. My second choice would be Italy. I love love love Italian food so that would be a big part of my interest.

Traveling is such an exciting part of life. I love escaping from my stressful life and relaxing into a different one. From the website, www.quotegarden.com, Charles Horton Cooley said, “To get away from one’s working environment is, in a sense, to get away from one’s self; and this is often the chief advantage of travel and change.” I do love returning home to my family after the vacation but just being there for the week or two that I am, is such a retreat. I know that traveling will become a big part of my life. I will be traveling at my age now, with my future husband, and then with my own family.

The Importance of Friendship

My Friend
A friend is like a flower,
a rose to be exact,
Or maybe like a brand new gate
that never comes unlatched.
A friend is like an owl,
both beautiful and wise.
Or perhaps a friend is like a ghost,
whose spirit never dies.
A friend is like a heart that goes
strong until the end.
Where would we be in this world
if we didn’t have a friend.

In ones life you will encounter many friends. Some may become your simple friends for a short time, friends that stay throughout college, or your very best friends who stick with you your whole life. Once you have make friends, you try to keep them, but people change and move on. But there will always be one friend who stays forever. There are several key personality traits that make a good friendship. One is to always be honest to one another. It takes a lot of time to gain trust between each other, but only seconds to shatter it. Listening to each other through good or bad times you each may go through in your life plays an important part too. Another part that keeps your friendship going is laughter. Having humor in your friendship keeps you from taking things too seriously. Lastly, just always being there whenever, wherever your best friend needs you.

My life wouldn’t be anywhere near where it is today, without my friends that have been with me along the way. They have shaped me to who I am today and who I am going to be. I have had numerous friends from the time when I was in kindergarten to my senior year today. Of course I’ve lost friends and gained new ones. I have learned who my true friends are and that it is quality, not quanity. The true and the few are the ones who honestly care for you.

Today I have four true best friends. I have been friends with them since my freshmen year, and even though we drift at times we always end up back together. There was never a time where I couldn’t trust these girls. I am always laughing, sometimes crying, but we always have a good time no matter what may come our way. Even times when we have absolutely nothing to do, we still have a good time.

Knowing that it is my senior year, I am aware of that fact that I have to move away from my friends. It is going to be a hard time in my life to leave the people who have been there for me for years. Together we grew out of our innocence and learned the important things in life together. I know that if they are my true friends, they will somehow find their way back to me, and I will do the same. Even though I will meet many new people in college, and surely become friends with several, I will still miss the ones who have grown up with me and made me to be the person I am today.

My buddy, My pal, My best friend

Many grandchildren see their grandparents as people who are old, give you money, and half the time don’t know what they are talking about. For me that was not the case.

Fortunately, I wasn’t one of those grandchildren. Growing up I was very close with my grandpa. He was a man with many words, he was the kind of guy who would meet you and treat you like he knew you for years. Sadly my family and I received the news that my grandfather was diagnosed with lung cancer. He slowly began to lose his hair, his weight, and his strength. It was never hard for me to do anything with, or for my grandpa. But it was the hardest thing I ever had to do in my life, saying goodbye to him. On October 18,2006 He died at the age of 82. He was a lovely father of eight children, husband and grandfather of 23 grandchildren. I found myself thinking, did I tell him I love him? I had never felt this pain before; just so many thoughts came in my head. How can I tell him that I’m selfish and I need him more than God does or better yet, that he wasn’t just a grandpa, that he was my mentor, and best friend.

I have too many memories that I will always cherish. One of my fond memories is when he came home from golfing in the summer, he would come home and pick up my grandma and I and he’d would go for our ride to Canada. We would always take the same way along the water and we would stop and feed the ducks if my grandma didn’t forget the bread and get some ice cream. We would also stop and see the large flower clock that was made of fresh flowers. When he took me home we would always go to McDonald’s and have only French fries in the car on my way home.

When my family and I came together and said our good byes I came up with a cute idea, to get golf balls and put our favorite memories and sayings he used to say and put them with him. He loved to golf, so my cousins, Catlin, Collin, Delaine, Erin, Mike, Pat, Vinny and my brother’s and sister’s and I wrote sayings on golf balls for him. So he can have them forever. I put on mine, I love you and Burger king/sleepovers because my sisters and my cousin Catlin would have sleepovers at my grandparent’s house and he would wake us up nice and early and we would go to Burger king for breakfast.

A few days after his death, my mom showed me a note he left her on a back of a business card. A part of it said when you close your eyes; I’ll be there. Unfortunately, I haven’t dreamt about him. So when I sleep at night I hope to have my first dream about my hero, my grandpa, Robert T. Fitzgibbons.

Staying Local

As you enter the Chique Boutique Located on 1069 Abbott Road in South Buffalo you will find an array of unique assortments of purses in a shabby/chic atmosphere. The purses are designer inspired bags and fun and funky purses. Ranging from purses, Jewelry, soy candles, stemware and scarves that are locally hand crafted. Owner Devon Donovan says opening her store has always been a life long dream. She is really happy at the response she is receiving from the public. Even though its not in a plaza or a main shopping area, it still attracts people from many different backgrounds.

Devon graduated from Canisius College majoring in business management which helped to create a business model that now makes her dream a reality. Chique Boutique has been in business since June 2006 and Donovan’s store has really expanded and grown since then. I think it’s important for everyone to step in and support small business. Especially for women because in the past women worked for men and didn’t have their own business.

I have been working at Chique Boutique for a year and I really enjoy working for Devon. I got this job because it’s my brother Mike’s girlfriend soon to be finance. Working at Chique Boutique has taught me aspects of running a business and how it takes a lot of work and dedication. Also it has taught me to deal with people and selling stuff. The toughest part of being a small business owner is funding and having to everything by yourself. What I have learned from working at the shop I can also take it with me in the future.

What is really interesting is Devon works very hard and keeps her business in the family which is great. I am the only employee that works at Chique Boutique and she has her mom to go to if she needs help. It’s great she has her family supporting her in what she has accomplished and they are very proud. I can’t wait to see what is in store for the Chique Boutique in the future.

Since Devon is from South Buffalo she feels it’s good to get people from other local areas to visit at the Chique Boutique. To interest new customers from the West Seneca area, Devon Donovan is offering West students and faculty a 15 percent discount on a purchase through the month of November if you show your student or teacher ID.
